Steven Dougherty is a former professional ballroom dancer specialize in International Style Standard, Latin and American Smooth. National 10 Dance Champion, National Standard, U.S. National Professional Rising Star American Smooth Champion in 2000 and a five-time U.S. and World Finalist and was the 2007 World American Smooth Showdance Champion. Organizer of the Jaye Dougherty Juilliard Star Ball and owner of the Metropolitan Dance Center.

Overview

Steven Dougherty who began working at Juilliard in 2014, teaches ballroom dance to Drama students and organizes the Jaye Dougherty Juilliard Star Ball, a dancessport competition for first-year drama students. Steven has worked in the dance industry professionally since 1992 after leaving his position with IBM as a programmer and systems engineer. Although he graduated from Iona College with a BA in computer information systems, dance was his passion.

Steven has been ballroom dancing since the age of thirteen. As an amateur competitor, Steven and his partner Eulia Baranovsky was a National 10-dance Champion and National international style Standard Champion, having represented the U.S. in two World Championships, in Singapore and Germany and was a U.S. Dance Ambassador to the Soviet Union.

Professional

As a professional dance competitor, Steven Dougherty has won over 40 regional titleswas, the U.S. National Rising Star American Smooth Champion in 2000 and a five-time U.S. and World Finalist and was the 2007 World American Smooth Showdance Champion. He has also made appearances as a dancer on several television soap operas, ESPN, and PBS’s America’s Ballroom Challenge.

He is a nationally certified adjudicator and has judged many prestigious events around the country including the United States Dancesport Championships, Ohio Star Ball championships, and the USA Dance National DanceSport Championships.

Steven has many choreography credits most notably “Romeo and Juliet” for The Juilliard School in New York, NY where he is also currently a faculty member in the drama division. Steven has performed at Carnegie Hall, Mohegan Sun Casino and the Vail International Dance Festival. He has appeared on All My Children and CBS’s As the World Turns. Steven is also the co-owner of the Metropolitan Dance Center, a International style Standard and [International style latin|Latin dance]] studio in Stamford, Conn.
